Welcome

Friends of the Towans is a registered charity which offers opportunities for people to get involved with the conservation and management of the spectacular sand dunes landscape around the town of Hayle on the eastern shores of St Ives Bay.

Lying behind Hayle’s famous “three miles of golden sand”, the Towans – Cornish for “dunes” – comprise one of the richest places for plants in Cornwall, with 25% of the county’s plant species found here.

The Towans are also an important area for birds; invertebrates such as nationally scarce butterflies, moths and bees; and reptiles like adders and common lizards.

Volunteer with us

Our practical conservation sessions are a great way to get some fresh air and exercise and meet new friends – all whilst doing something positive to help the local environment.

We also offer opportunities for outdoor drawing and painting with our Art Club, and beach cleaning sessions with the Save Our Sand group. In addition, we run guided walks and workshops, carry out wildlife surveying and monitoring and work with local schools.
